In the Garlean Grip

When the Garlean Empire annexed a small portion of the Black Shroud, Laurent’s parents, Victor and Isabel, were forced into service in Garlemald. Both parents served in domestic capacities for a wealthy family, his mother in the stables and father in the gardens. Laurent and his three younger siblings inherited that same fate. However, when Laurent came of age, he was forced into the military. With the promise of citizenship dangled before the conscripts, including potential citizenship for his aging parents, he was an excellent and obedient soldier. Perhaps your character met him in the military, knowing him by the name Evander aan Laurentius. Or, perhaps, your character faced him on the field before his squad was captured.

Sharlayan Residency

After his squad was forced to surrender, Laurent was sure he would face execution for his crimes. However, after extensive interviews, he went to trial and made an ally of a scholar who pleaded on his behalf. For him, freedom was not a merciful verdict, as he does not see himself as innocent. Despite weak protests, though, he has been sponsored by the scholar, Ludovic Lauforte, and his brother Leon. Laurent lived with the brothers and, with their help, he enrolled in formal schooling for the first time in his life. During this time, he haunted crowded places in the seaport city and watched the people come and go. He aspired to be a gleaner, so he was prone to trying to befriend any gleaner he met. If your character is from Sharlayan, or traveled there during the early events of Endwalker, perhaps they ran into him at the libraries or crafting halls. Or maybe you found him sketching portraits of the stray cats at the docks.

The Scars of Service

Although Laurent thrives mentally in academic spaces, he struggles to find comfort in a free world. For example, when trapped in a domestic setting, Laurent tended to compulsively clean, tidy, and organize, doing so to the point of detriment to his health. He also avoided eye contact with people, even the Lauforte brothers, and would withdraw physically when people would approach him while talking. However, after a trip to Thavnair with Louis, Laurent started to make positive strides in managing his mental health. Louis couldn’t explain it, but the brothers started to take Laurent on all their research trips to see if travel was the key to helping their friend. Perhaps your character met him during one of these trips or was even the person in Thavnair or Radz-at-han who helped him finally catch a glimpse of his own self-worth.

OOC Information

† Despite being very friendly and kind, Laurent is very shy and anxious. This makes it hard to initiate walk-up rp, and I know that is frustrating. If you would like to rp, and aren't sure how to initiate it for your own character, feel free to send me a tell. I am always up for OoC communication and I am happy to find a way to make IC connections.† Some of the things that may come up in rp with Laurent include: genre / setting appropriate discussions of servitude and conscription, discussions of past abuse or non-graphic allusions to self-harm, panic attacks, and conflict aversion. Please feel free to contact me if any of these things are triggers. I will happily adjust accordingly.† I, the writer, am over 30 and prefer to co-write (long-term) with those over 18 due to the aforementioned themes in Laurent's story.
